Setting Up for Success, MindShare 2016: TRANSFORM

MindShare 2016- No Head Logo Rough

When it came time for Ferris State University’s design students to propose a theme for the 13th annual MindShare event, they first did extensive research into Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) and the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation (SAF) to find what would resonate most with the Grand Rapids community.

Since MindShare’s beginning, Ferris State University and SAF have partnered for the annual event, which is the premier fundraiser for SAF.

Ferris students provide all production and design assistance for MindShare. The team is comprised of senior design students that work on the event collateral from September to April as part of their senior project. The students make a formal presentation to the SAF staff, board and committee members of three potential design concepts. Once the concept is decided, the students draft and design all promotional materials.

We have an extremely impressive placement rate in our program year after year,” said Alison Popp, associate professor at Ferris State University. “We credit the students’ experience in our Design Project Center for giving them the skills necessary to hit the ground running in the industry. They are given a budget and real-world deadlines. You can imagine how having those realities makes for a productive learning environment.”

This year’s theme, TRANSFORM, honors the diligent work and tremendous gains of the GRPS Transformation Plan. The plan’s vision is for GRPS to become a world-class performing district with a diverse portfolio of the highest quality schools, with the top educational talent, to meet the differing academic, social and physical needs of every student with an unrelenting focus on high achievement, high expectations and preparation for the 21st century economy.

I almost always get teared up at least once during the evening because I’m so moved by the impact of SAF,” Popp said.

This year’s MindShare takes place on April 27 at the JW Marriott Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. The event showcases GRPS students and staff, highlights their creativity and achievement, and invites the community to join us in supporting them.
