On June 10, 2016, tens of thousands of Deloitte professionals spent their day contributing to more than 950 community service projects in more than 80 US communities in celebration of Impact Day, Deloitte’s 17th annual nationwide day of community service. Held on the first Friday of June, Impact Day coincides with the start of Deloitte’s fiscal year and kicks off the organization’s year-round commitment to corporate citizenship.
“Each year on Impact Day, I love seeing our people fill classrooms, parks and training centers to make a difference in communities across the country,” said Cathy Engelbert, chief executive officer, Deloitte LLP. “This is a day to celebrate all we do to make an impact that matters in the communities where we live and work.”
Deloitte’s Grand Rapids office chose to bring a team of volunteers to Mulick Park Elementary to spruce up the school and the surrounding grounds. Volunteers tackled painting, tree-trimming, brush-clearing, planting, mulching, and organizing the school library. One specialized team led Field Day activities for students in the morning, to celebrate the last day of school.
Hazel, a volunteer from Deloitte’s local office, explained, “I love Impact Day. Just by the nature of our work, much of what we do is not as visible. On Impact Day, we leave our offices and actively engage our community. We get to make a tangible impact.”
Deloitte’s goal is to have, “an impact that matters.” Their volunteer squad showed the whole Mulick Park Elementary community—students, teachers, staff, families, and surrounding neighbors—that ultimately, they matter. “It is such an honor to have a company take time out of their work day to help clean up our school. It lets our community know that we care, that they care,” said Mulick Park principal, Lisa Minnella.
Reflecting on the day, fifth grade teacher Helen Metcalf added, “We talk to the students about this day and what it means. It’s a way for them to learn about giving back and helping others and to talk about how they can do the same someday. I think that’s the biggest impact.”
The investment of time, skills, energy, and enthusiasm by Deloitte employees made Mulick Park Elementary beautiful, inside and out. Deloitte’s impact will undoubtedly resonate with students and the rest of the school community, far beyond June 10.
