Teammate Thursday – Meet Angel

This month, the staff at Southwest Community Campus shared with us the story of one of their standout GR8 Sports athletes—Angel.

We have had our share of outstanding young people come and go at Southwest Community Campus, but no one surpasses the pride that we feel as a staff in Angel’s development as a person.

Over just one summer, Angel transformed himself from a distracted and disruptive student into the president of the Student Council. Upon receiving this honor, he was congratulated by his challenger, a teammate, and the result was the two volunteered to share in the responsibility of packing up our mobile band room. This may seem like a small gesture, but it’s exactly the kind of humility and kindness we want to see in our student athletes.

On the field, Angel has developed into a giving captain who willingly accepts the perceived lesser roles to ensure the strength of the team. Everyone wants to score goals, but Angel has volunteered to play goalie, sweeper and defensive midfielder, as well as netting a few of his own when given the opportunity.

There is no doubt this transformation can be attributed to his experiences in athletics, as well as to the guidance of our soccer and basketball coaches, Jose Marquez and Ken Ortega.

To be sure, Angel can maneuver a ball!  But he has also become a leader, an engaged student, and friend to all.
