For a second year, Deloitte’s Grand Rapids office has descended on a school in GRPS for the firm’s annual Impact Day.

A day, for the past 18 years, that has been set aside for more than 60,000 Deloitte professionals –around the world- to spend the day volunteering in their communities. In Grand Rapids, Ken-O-Sha Elementary was the lucky beneficiary and received a much needed manicure and landscape up-do!

The Deloitte team arrived at the school at 8:30 am on Friday, June 9 ready to work! And what was calling for a stormy Friday, turned out to be a beautiful –albeit muggy- day for volunteering.

If you have ever been to Ken-O-Sha Elementary, then you understand the magnitude of this project. But our Impact

Before courtyard care-taking

volunteers were undaunted! They stared down the tasks before them: the enormous play grounds in need of mulch, the abundant flower beds deprived of a good weeding and a perfectly snuggled courtyard overgrown with history and covered by years of unintentional neglect. The plan even included building a Gaga Pit, a popular new variant of dodgeball, where players dodge a ball inside a confined sand pit. Equipped with yards and yards of mulch, a few good pairs of clippers and a well-oiled chainsaw for good measure, the volunteers jumped right in. The day wasn’t just all work, work, work! Wanting to include the students in some of the fun, Deloitte hosted – in-between digging, preening, and building – field day! Classrooms joined the Deloitte volunteers for a series of field day challenges, including dizzy bat races, parachute and even a modified version of disc golf!

Prepping the Gaga Pit

From weeding, painting and planting all the way to digging, building and installing a Gaga Pit, this was more than a simple volunteer project. This was a day dedicated to backbreaking work – and we couldn’t be more appreciative. Now with beautified grounds to enjoy and a fresh installation of a Gaga Pit, the kids and the community are the real winners. And thanks to the immense generosity of our donors, the Student Advancement Foundation was able to help provide the necessary items to ensure a smooth and successful Impact Day!
