Throughout my education, I was directly impacted by the power of donors…

At the conclusion of this past school year, the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation had a lot to celebrate- we hit our recurring donor matching grant distributed by Liesel Litzenburger Meijer! A special thank you to Liesel Litzenburger Meijer, and to all of our committed recurring donors for exuding confidence in our work to strengthen the educational experience for all Grand Rapids Public School students by helping us continue to grow and sustain a recurring giving program.

What’s a celebration without mentioning our donors who made developing this program a reality; meet Alexis Rangel. A generous supporter and advocate who joined the Foundation as a recurring donor during the MindShare Gala this past spring, and helped us reach our matching grant!

We had the opportunity to talk with Alexis, and learn more about why she loves the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation…

How were you first introduced to the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation?

A friend introduced me to the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation about eight years ago. She brought me along to the MindShare Gala event and I left inspired. I later reconnected with the Foundation through my employer, Lake Michigan Credit Union, who have been longtime supporters of GRSAF.

Why is giving important to you?

Throughout my education, I was directly impacted by the power of donors. I didn’t know it at the time but donors helped cover the cost for me to attend field trips, play sports, participate in camps, and go to college. Because of their impact, it has always been important for me to give what I can whenever I can.

Are you involved with any other organizations?

I am on the board of Habitat for Humanity of Kent County and the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan. I am also a proud Grand Valley State University alumna where I love giving back my time, talents, and treasure.

Which impact area are you most passionate about and why?

I am passionate about literacy and physical wellness so it is hard to pick one! I loved to read and was very active as a kid, which stuck with me into adulthood. Participating in school sports built my confidence and helped me stay out of trouble, which is why I support the GR8 Girls program. We know that girls who play sports have lower rates of teen pregnancy and drug use and build skills like teamwork and goal-setting. I love that as a donor and volunteer with GRSAF I can support girl’s athletics in the Grand Rapids Public Schools.

Favorite event and why?

I love the MindShare gala! It is so powerful to hear from the teachers and principals who pour their hearts into their students.

Do you have a favorite interaction or memory with our GRPS students you’d like to share?

At MindShare 2018, two young men performed a rap with their school choir. They were fantastic! I saw the students at another event a week later and mentioned how much I loved their performance. They beamed and we talked for nearly fifteen minutes about all of their upcoming performances. They loved their choir teacher and being able to share their talents at school!

Thank you Alexis, and thank you to all recurring donors for your commitment to the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation, and the students of Grand Rapids Public Schools- we are beyond lucky to have you working alongside the Foundation!
