Every Grand Rapids Public Schools student deserves every opportunity to succeed. And as the exclusive fundraising partner of GRPS, the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation is dedicated to raising funds that benefit each and every student.
One such fund, earmarked to resolve urgent or essential needs of students as well as cover the cost of incentives or class trips, is the Principals Discretionary Fund. Sometimes viewed as a last resort fund, money can be used in many different ways to help GRPS students fully participate in their learning.
With an initial gift from the Amway Corporation in 2014, this designated fund allows principals to determine what needs can be remedied quickly such as broken eyeglasses, outgrown school uniforms, winter attire and more. It’s also a flexible fund in which principals can request dollars be applied to help promote positive behavior initiatives or even end-of-year celebrations.
This year, during the 16th annual MindShare gala, the evening highlight was the surprise renaming of the fund in honor of retiring superintendent, Teresa Weatherall Neal – The Teresa Weatherall Neal Principal’s Discretionary Fund (TWNPDF). Surprising Superintendent Weatherall Neal with this heartfelt tribute, Mr. Doug DeVos declared more than $200k in fundraising dollars were raised in her honor!
This fund speaks to the heart of what Superintendent Weatherall Neal believes in, to remove barriers that may challenge a student’s success. Our goal as the Foundation for Grand Rapids Public Schools, is to ensure all funds raised support students’ educational journeys and every GRPS student is given opportunities to learn, grow and thrive.
