ArtPrize 8 has been a city-wide canvas for artists from Michigan and the world. As has been true for the previous seven years, ArtPrize has lived up to its mission to “encourage critical discourse, celebrate artists, transform urban space and promote cultural understanding.”
Among the artists being celebrated are ten high school students from GRPS. These students were named the Top 10 finalists in the Consumers Energy SmartArt Competition. “SmartArt” encourages students to explore artistic expression through the lens of environmental sustainability, by incorporating the theme of renewable energy into their work. The finalists completed works were printed on a banner hanging from the Consumers Energy building on the corner of Monroe and Fulton Streets in downtown Grand Rapids throughout the duration of ArtPrize 8. Go check it out!
In true ArtPrize fashion, the public had an opportunity to vote on its favorite piece. On Sept. 20, the public choice winner, “Efficiency,” by Eric Steeby, was announced via Facebook. Eric was recognized during the ArtPrize 8 Top 20 Public Reveal at Rosa Parks Circle. At the same time, the SmartArt 2016 Overall Award was announced for Grace Cameron’s piece: “Winds of Time.”
ArtPrize celebrates the power of art to engage, to excite and to inspire. For those reasons, SAF recognizes the critical role of arts education in our schools. Congratulations to Eric, Grace and all of the GRPS finalists for sharing your creative voices with our community!
