Mind, body and soul. This is something Shelby Reno, the owner of CKO Kickboxing in Grand Rapids, knows a thing or two about. A fitness guru and teacher for over 20 years, Shelby has seen how staying fit and active brings people together. “I became a group fitness instructor when I lived in Dallas, Tex., in the mid-’90s. I taught classes to stay fit, to network and to be held accountable by other likeminded people. Both friends and instructors I respected made sure I came to class, where we all got a killer workout and had fun.”
A year ago, Shelby opened CKO Kickboxing- Grand Rapids. Now, her full-time career is helping others in their own fitness journeys. Just last year CKO and GR8 Girls partnered together to make a difference in our community.
GR8 Girls is an initiative of SAF’s GR8 Sports, Great Kids, which raises money and inspires girls in the Grand Rapids Public Schools to get active and stay healthy by participating in after-school sports. Together with other strong women in our community, Shelby is supporting our next generation of girls to also become strong in mind, body and soul.
On January 7, the GR8 Girls kicked of 2017 with their GR8 Girls Challenge at CKO Kickboxing. Over 35 women, under Shelby’s direction, jabbed and kicked their way to a new, healthier year. It was a great workout, a ton of fun and raised money for GR8 Girls. Alexis Rangel tried kickboxing for the first time on January 7, sharing: “What a great workout! It was so powerful to see so many strong and fierce women laughing and sweating together to support GR8 Girls! Kickboxing was the perfect jump start to my fitness goals for 2017.”
Wish you hadn’t missed January 7’s class at CKO Kickboxing? You have an opportunity to join us for our second class on Saturday February 4 at 11:00 am! The cost for the February 4 class is $25 if you are new to CKO (to cover the cost of your gloves) or $15 if you are returning. ($15 from each participant is donated to SAF’s GR8 Girls). Then in March, the challenge moves to AM Yoga. The GR8 Girls will be trying new locations all year long.
